IEC 60601-1-6: Usability of Medical Electrical Equipment

IEC 60601-1-6 is the usability collateral standard in the 60601 family. Rather than setting out its own usability process, it directs manufacturers of medical electrical equipment to apply the usability engineering process in IEC 62366-1, and it treats that work as part of showing conformity with the 60601 series.

What It Covers

In practice the standard works as a bridge. A test laboratory assessing this collateral isn't usually running usability studies itself; it's checking that a usability engineering file exists and follows the IEC 62366-1 process for the equipment's user interface. Gaps in the usability work can therefore surface in the 60601 report, not only in a submission review.

Because it's a collateral standard, it applies to medical electrical equipment within the scope of IEC 60601-1. Software-only products and non-electrical devices don't come under it, although they usually reach IEC 62366-1 directly. The substance lives in IEC 62366-1, so a firm with a sound usability engineering file has done most of what this collateral asks for.

Other collateral standards shape the user interface too. Alarm systems under IEC 60601-1-8 and the lay operator focus of IEC 60601-1-11 both affect what the usability engineering file needs to cover, so for equipment with alarms or home use the three are best planned together.

Who It Applies To

  • Manufacturers of medical electrical equipment under the IEC 60601 series
  • Equipment with operator controls, displays, alarms or setup steps that affect safety
  • Teams preparing a 60601 test program where the laboratory will review the usability engineering file

What Auditors Check

  • Usability Engineering File

A usability engineering file for the equipment that follows the IEC 62366-1 process and is referenced from the 60601 documentation.

  • Consistency With the 60601 Report

The same device version, user interface and accompanying documents in the usability file as in the electrical safety testing.

  • Use-Related Risk in the Risk File

Use errors identified in usability work carried into the ISO 14971 risk management file with their risk controls.

  • Alarm and Lay Operator Coverage

Where IEC 60601-1-8 or IEC 60601-1-11 apply, evidence the usability work covered alarm signals and lay operators.
